Situated on a hill above the port is the impressive medieval fortress "El Castillo", built in the 11th and 12th centuries and later enlarged. From the castle towers you have a magnificent view of the coastline, and especially during the summer season concerts are frequently held in the castle. On the same hill there was already an ancient Roman settlement, "Diannium", and the remains of fortifications and houses that have been found can be seen in the Archaeological Museum of the castle. Other exhibits are from the ancient Iberian and Moorish periods. Surrounded is "El Castillo" of the old town of Denia, with narrow and picturesque streets of Moorish origin. Numerous beautiful buildings from the modernist era attest that Denia achieved great importance as a commercial center, especially at the end of the 19th century. Also thanks to its toy industry, Denia achieved prosperity, in the Toy Museum particularly beautiful exhibits are exhibited. Near the port is the "Baix la Mar" neighborhood with traditional fishermen's houses and picturesque squares and alleys. Here you can enjoy the excellent seafood from Denia, well known are the "Gambas Rojas" (red prawns). Another specialty is the sweet wine "Mistela", which is drunk as an aperitif or dessert. Denia has 16 kilometers of fine sand beaches that were awarded the EU Blue Flag, in the North "Area de Les Marines" and in the South "Marineta Casiana".
